Turkey’s Slow Food Village: Germiyan

Slow Food is a global organization with the objective of combatting the fast food culture by promoting local food cultures and educating people about the local cooking traditions. This movement, for good, clean and fair food started in Italy and now more than 160 countries are a part of it. Villages that are interested in becoming a slow food village get in contact with the organization and if they fulfil the requirements they become a slow food village.

Villagers from Germiyan, a small village in the Aegean coast of Turkey applied to become a slow food village and they received their certificate in 2015. One of the traditional foods of Germiyan is the sourdough bread that the villagers cook themselves. You can also find it in nearby villages.

So now you know that this little village in the Aegean coast of Turkey is a slow food village. But this is not the only thing that makes it stand out amongst other villages nearby. Germiyan is also known for its houses covered with drawings made by a local woman, named Nuran Erden. She first drew the Slow Food’s logo onto a wall in the village, which is the symbol of a snail, then she started to draw on the walls of houses, which first annoyed the other villagers. However, they all ended up loving her works. All they need to do is to paint the walls of their houses all white and wait for her to pop over and decorate them.

We were lucky enough to chat with Nuran Erden while we were visiting. She gave us a warm welcome and showed us her works that we missed in the small streets. It’s amazing how the talent inside people can come out no matter where they live or what they do. If you come visit Germiyan one day, don’t hesitate to say hi if you see a lady drawing on the walls.

Germiyan is about 20 minutes away by car from Çeşme, a more touristic town of Izmir.

Arles, the Meeting Point of Photographers in Provence, France

Arles was one of the prettiest cities in our short trip to Provence last September. The first thing we noticed were the photographs posted up on the walls around the city. To be honest, at first, we didn’t really understand the purpose of these photographs but as we kept seeing those interesting photos almost everywhere in the city we realized they were part of the Rencontres d’Arles, previously named as the International Photography Meetings of Arles, held every summer. These meetings, which have been organized since 1970 attracted numerous photographers both amateur and professional to Arles. Lots of famous photographers have been discovered during these meetings.

Arles is the largest city in France with an area of 758km² in the region of Bouches-du-Rhone. Arles, which used to be the settlement of Greek colonies, was one of the most important cities of “Gaul”, a Roman colony founded by Julius Cesar. With the precious Roman historical monuments, Arles was included in the World Heritage List of UNESCO in 1981. The arena, amphitheatre and the Roman Baths are among those ancient monuments that are worth visiting.

Arles was also home to Van Gogh between 1888 and 1889. He lived there with another famous painter Gauguin and painted more than 300 paintings while he was there. If you are interested in art, you must visit The Foundation Vincent Van Gogh in the centre of the city.

Another museum to visit is the Reattu Museum named after the painter Jacques Reattu who was born in Arles in 1760. You can visit this museum near Rhone after a nice wail along the river.

Welcome to the Largest Street Art Festival: Upfest Bristol

On the 29th of July, more than three hundred artists came from all over the world for Upfest and they coloured up the streets of Bristol for three days. It would have been a shame not to visit these arts made during Europe’s largest street art and graffiti festival while I was in Bristol with my boyfriend. We managed to take pictures of almost all the street arts as a result of a two day walk around Bedminster.

Bedminster is a neighbourhood in the south of Bristol where you wouldn’t probably visit if you didn’t have a good reason. Festivals such as Upfest help these neglected and unattractive areas to attract big crowds and I bet that Bedminster will be one of the coolest and most popular neighbourhoods in Bristol in a couple of years.
